Head of School Search

In the spring of 2021, Head of School Joel Pelcyger announced that after co-founding, and then leading the school for 50 years, he intends to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.

The 2021-2022 school year will be spent celebrating both the school’s 50th anniversary as well as Joel’s retirement. The Board of Directors has appointed Anna Tran Reyna and Kerri Speck to co-chair a committee dedicated to the transition effort. The Board has retained Butler/White Strategies, an executive search firm that specializes in independent schools, to support PS1 through a national search for our next leader.

While the Board of Directors is responsible for appointing the next Head of PS1, and some aspects of the search will require confidentiality, the Search Committee aims to make the process as open and inclusive as possible. Via surveys, interviews, and community meetings, key stakeholders will have opportunities to share their perspectives on PS1 and their ideas about the school's future leadership needs.

Per the Board’s Succession Plan, the Board will hire an Interim Head of School for the 2022-2023 school year, and a long-term Head of School for the 2023-2024 school year and beyond. Learn more HERE.

Please see below for communications that have been sent to our community and FAQs.

Joel and Anna have each written a letter reflecting on Joel's time at PS1 and his decision to say goodbye (see link below). The Search Committee will update this page periodically with more details about what is next, so please continue to check back.
