Our Campus - Ps1 Pluralistic School One

Since the school’s inception in 1971, PS1 has carefully grown into a robust and vibrant campus in the heart of Santa Monica.

The campus resides on 1.2 acres which includes approximately 30,500 sq. ft. of buildings and two expansive play yards (one of which is home to the oldest coastal live oak tree in Santa Monica!).

Joy in discovery and emphasis on sustainability and community is supported by our award-winning architecture and light-filled campus.

Bright, spacious classrooms designed to bring learning to life feature their own outdoor areas, shared workrooms and easy flow to Library, Art, P.E., Music, Spanish, and The STEAM Studio. PS1’s play areas are some of the most innovative elementary school playgrounds in Southern California. From the ground up, PS1 encourages exploration and interaction.

PS1's Sustainable Campus

Since the school’s inception in 1971, PS1 has carefully grown into a robust and vibrant campus in the heart of Santa Monica. Through sustainable fundraising efforts and in strategic collaboration with its Board of Directors, the school proudly owns all its buildings as well as the soil beneath them. The PS1 families of today enjoy that legacy and ensure it continues by contributing to the ongoing fiscal health and vitality of the school.

Green Business Certification

In November 2020 PS1 was awarded a Green Business Certification! The application process took almost a year and the certification signifies and recognizes excellence in the many steps PS1 continues to take to incorporate sustainable practices into our operations.

The Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program is an official certification program of the City of Santa Monica and is part of the California Green Business Program Network (CAGBN). CAGBN leads the state and nation in working with small to medium-sized businesses to grow a vibrant and healthy green economy, alongside Santa Monica Travel and Tourism, the Chamber of Commerce, Arts Earth Partnership, and Sustainable Works.

Sustainable Quality Awards

March 21, 2018: The City of Santa Monica in conjunction with the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce AGAIN named PS1 Pluralistic School the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the SUSTAINABLE QUALITY AWARD for Excellence in Sustainable Economic Development, Social Responsibility, and Stewardship of the Environment.

We are thrilled and honored to have received our fourth Santa Monica Sustainability award, including this second SQA Grand Prize.

The Sustainable Quality Awards recognizes businesses in the Santa Monica area that are putting sustainable practices into action. PS1 is proud to be part of the city's efforts to lead the way in this critical issue for our nation. Awarded annually, the SQA Grand Prize is given for combined excellence in Sustainable Economic Development, Social Responsibility, and Stewardship of the Natural Environment.

Getting the top prize in the whole city for ALL businesses in Santa Monica is a huge achievement!! We thank our entire PS1 community - students, parents, and staff - who continue to support our efforts in these areas!

April 27, 2011: The City of Santa Monica in conjunction with the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce named PS1 Pluralistic School the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the SUSTAINABLE QUALITY AWARD for Excellence in Sustainable Economic Development, Social Responsibility, and Stewardship of the Environment.

This was the third time in twelve years we were honored with a Sustainable Quality Award; our first Grand Prize. In his acceptance speech, Head of School Joel Pelcyger emphasized that our motto is “Use less; do more.” It’s not just about the campus we’ve built; not just the paper we save or the low waste lunches we eat; not just the Green products we use; not just the values we teach; not just the example we set; not just the conscientious students we raise – it is about all of these things taken together that we feel qualified us for this Award.

Main entrance to PS1 is the western-most door on Broadway. Ring the doorbell to connect with the front office and gain entry.

Street Parking: 2 and 3 hr meters available on Broadway and surface streets around campus. 9 hr meters available on 12th St and Euclid St (south of Broadway).

Metro Stop located at 17th and Colorado (Expo Line).
