Differentiation in a Multi-Age Classroom

At PS1, there are two lead teachers in every class delivering lessons and providing support throughout the day. We also leverage our half group periods each week to strategically plan small group work times. Additionally, a key component of our overall program is one-to-one conferencing with each child so that we are meeting students where they are in their academic journey and then nudging them to what they are ready for next. In Writers' Workshop, teachers conference with students to set individualized short and long-term writing goals. In Readers' Workshop, students practice reading concepts and try out new strategies in their "just-right books." Math class is a time of day when students work in their grade equivalent groupings and are presented with appropriate challenges to extend their conceptual understanding. In short, we are differentiating throughout the day, every day.
