Learning Expeditions

Los Angeles As Our Extended Campus
At PS1 Pluralistic School, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Curiosity is sparked through real experiences, real places, and real people. Our students regularly take part in Learning Expeditions — purposeful field trips that transform Southern California, and especially Los Angeles, into an extended classroom for hands-on discovery, cultural connection, and joyful learning.
Los Angeles is one of the most diverse, culturally rich, and dynamic cities in the world. At PS1, we use this to our advantage. Our Learning Expeditions take students across neighborhoods, museums, parks, and institutions where they engage with experts, ask questions, and immerse themselves in new environments. These experiences strengthen their identity as learners and community members.
Recent Learning Expeditions have included:
-
Exploring the Santa Monica Public Library to learn about research, storytelling, and public resources
-
Venturing to Chavez Ravine to study the history of the neighborhood that existed before Dodger Stadium
-
Visiting the California Science Center to experience the Space Shuttle Endeavor and investigate principles of engineering and astronomy
-
Traveling to Olvera Street to observe Día de los Muertos altars, exploring cultural traditions, symbolism, and community celebration
-
Hiking the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook to study the water cycle, landforms, and local ecology
-
Journeying to Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, where students explore untouched ecosystems, hike coastal trails, study endemic species, and gain firsthand understanding of conservation, geology, and the powerful role humans play in protecting natural resources
-
Participating in the annual camping trip, an immersive experience in community-building, outdoor education, and environmental stewardship
Each trip is intentionally designed to be developmentally appropriate, hands-on, and deeply connected to the curriculum.
Building Skills That Go Beyond Academics
On Learning Expeditions, students learn to navigate public spaces, ask thoughtful questions, engage respectfully with experts in the community, and collaborate with peers. These experiences build confidence, independence, and adaptability. They also provide opportunities to practice real-world problem-solving, reflection, and teamwork, all of which are essential components of a PS1 education.
Students begin to understand that learning is not something that happens in isolation. It is something they carry with them, something they actively participate in, and something they can ignite through curiosity and engagement.
Why Learning Expeditions Matter
Learning Expeditions empower PS1 students to see themselves as explorers and investigators. They expand students’ perspectives, deepen their critical thinking, and nurture their ability to make meaning from the world around them. By stepping outside the classroom, students discover new interests, develop cultural awareness, and experience firsthand the richness and complexity of the communities they inhabit.
At PS1, we believe that the world is full of possibilities. Learning Expeditions ensure that our students experience those possibilities up close, helping them grow into thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens who understand that learning truly has no boundaries.
A Tradition of Exploration and Joy
Our annual camping trip a cherished PS1 tradition that exemplifies our belief in experiential learning. For many students, it is the highlight of the year. Together, students, teachers, and staff explore tide pools, hike trails, share meals, and strengthen connections. It is a reminder that education is not only about academic growth but about community, resilience, wonder, and joy.
