Students in grades 2 & 3 are focused on instructional writing. They are working on writing building directions for a design of their own creation that classmates can follow. Students will learn how to sequence steps, write command sentences, create text features like a table of contents and glossary, and even create an All About the Author page and book blurb.
This study began by noticing how important clearly labeled images and precise language are in giving directions. Students examined lego instructions to inspire images for the directions. Then they did a “blind build” where one student gave directions for another student to follow without being able to see what each other were building. Both of these activities were followed by discussions of what they learned that can help when writing their own directions.
